SphereWMS History
A Long Track Record of SphereWMS Stability
SphereWMS started out in 1993 as a software development company (The UniCODE Group), delivering enterprise-class software under the traditional license and professional services model. We specialized in providing solutions to logistics providers, midsize companies, and large-scale enterprises in a range of vertical markets, including retail, automotive, aerospace/defense, and high-tech. We built a reputation for building agile, simple, and powerful applications that were easy to use and “actually useful.” Then in 2001, we recognized that many 3PLs were small to midsize companies, sensitive to the total cost of ownership, especially the high, up-front cost of implementing a warehouse management system.
Turning away from the hassles of purchasing and supporting software in-house, they were seeking single-sourced solutions where one vendor is responsible for software, servers, infrastructure, implementation, and support. In order to be competitive, a better solution was needed. One that included:
Why Choose a Cloud WMS?
Rapid Deployment
Simple subscription options rather than a huge capital investment
The ability to reallocate IT budget funds to projects that would improve their enterprise’s core competencies
Global Secure access via the Internet
We thought, Wow! These companies are on to something. 3PLs are too busy running their businesses to bother with long, complicated software installations and upgrades. Their business is warehouse and inventory management, not troubleshooting third-party software or maintaining aging infrastructures.
They need a solution that will:
- Simplify the management of complex order and inventory business processes
- Allow them to manage the flow of information between trading partners, suppliers, and carriers throughout all logistics processes.
We put our formidable experience, industry knowledge, and pragmatic programming skills to work and built a solution that included everything our clients needed and nothing they didn’t.
- We made it Agile, to allow for client-specific implementations.
- We made it Simple, to allow for ease-of-use and seamless integration.
- We made it Powerful, to allow for rapid implementation and heavy duty lifting.
- And we made it available on the Web to provide global services.
- We made it so Easy, a human could use it.
We called it GEM. Our customers loved it. The word kinda spread.
Our combination of agility, simplicity, power, and global services has transformed 3PLs worldwide. We thought, “Wow! We need to change our name to reflect what we do and the value we provide.” In 2001, we officially ended all development work as “The UniCODE Group” and focused exclusively on doing business as ASP Global Services Inc. While our customers were spreading the word about GEM, they were also talking to us. They told us what they liked, what they didn’t, and that fully featured, cost-effective solutions are their highest priority. We’re constantly working to provide better, more efficient solutions that make running a warehouse operation easier.
We listened and, toward the end of 2009, responded by taking the majority of the most popular modules and functionality we’ve developed over the years and bundled them together in a fully featured, more cost-effective solution that can be implemented faster, is easier to use, and requires less support. We call it SphereWMS, and it’s our dedicated offering for 3PL providers.
On July 13, 2021, Sphere WMS became an independent subsidiary of Constellation Software, Inc., an industry powerhouse and the second-largest software company in Canada, only surpassed by Shopify. Constellation Software, Inc. is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol [TSX: CSU], a testament to its financial stability and growth.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Constellation’s business approach is its commitment to continuous improvement. The company specializes in acquiring software companies, often within specific industries, and then implements best practices to enhance their operations. Unlike many other corporate strategies, Constellation Software firmly believes in the long-term potential of its acquired businesses, and it has never sold off a single acquired company.
